Picard Season 2 Won’t Include LeVar Burton’s Geordi La Forge

Chief engineer Geordi La Forge won’t be among the Next Generation characters appearing in Star Trek: Picard season 2, confirms actor LeVar Burton.

LeVar Burton confirms he won’t be appearing in Star Trek: Picard season 2 as Geordi La Forge. In early 2020, CBS All Access (now Paramount+) debuted its second Star Trek show, and even before it premiered it was a major television event. Star Trek: Picard brought back Patrick Stewart as his beloved TNG captain Jean-Luc Picard, supplying audiences with a heavy dose of nostalgia as he embarked on a new mission alongside a new crew. It was renewed for season 2 even before the first premiered, promising there would be plenty more adventures ahead for Picard.

Star Trek: Picard season 1 featured some familiar faces from the franchise’s past, reuniting Stewart with several of his Next Generation co-stars. They included Brent Spiner (Data), Jonathan Frakes (William Riker), and Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi). All of their appearances were well received, and many have begun to wonder who could join up for season 2. The first trailer for Star Trek: Picard season 2 already confirmed the mischevious Q (John de Lancie) will appear, and Stewart personally invited Whoopi Goldberg (Guinan) to cameo on the show last year. In short, there will be more figures from TNG popping up on Picard.

And yet, for all those who will appear, there are others who won’t. This includes LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge, the chief engineer of the USS Enterprise-D. Burton recently appeared on The View and spoke to Goldberg about Star Trek. When Goldberg asked him if he would be starring in Picard season 2, Burton replied, “I can say unequivocally that I am not doing season 2.” Goldberg then wondered if a guest role could be coming down the road, and Burton had this to say:

Here’s the thing: I believe it’s reasonable – in fact, practical – to assume that Picard still knows these people. They’re his friends. I think we might see some more of his friends. At least, I hope we do before this is all over.

Last year, Burton confirmed he had some talks about possibly reprising Geordi for Star Trek: Picard, so one has to wonder if there was once a plan to bring him back that sadly had to be changed. Production on season 2 was delayed considerably be the coronavirus pandemic, and that perhaps could have altered any plans for Burton to return. On the other hand, those initial talks might not have concerned season 2 at all; Star Trek: Picard will film season 3 back-to-back with 2, so there is proof of the producers already looking ahead.

Burton isn’t the only TNG member to miss out on Star Trek: Picard season 2, as Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher) recently shared she’s sad she won’t appear. Still, one can hope that as long as Picard is on the air, there will be opportunities to reunite the Next Generation crew. Additionally, Burton already has a television gig lined up in the next few months. He’ll be guest-hosting Jeopardy! this summer after fans campaigned for him to appear. Dreams came true there, so hopefully they can eventually do the same for Star Trek: Picard.
