Star-Lord’s newest ship has a name that is likely another reference to a famous singer in a new issue of Guardians of the Galaxy.
Warning! Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #14 by Marvel Comics below.
Star-Lord’s trusted ship the Bowie was recently destroyed by evil Gods earlier this year and now the Guardians of the Galaxy hero has got a new spaceship with another name inspired by his love of pop culture. In Guardians of the Galaxy #14, Peter Quill’s successor to the Bowie is revealed, as the superteam rides in the Almond – likely named after legendary British singer Marc Almond.
Peter Quill’s recent adventures with the Guardians have been chalked full of chaos and changes. Star-Lord was thought to be dead after getting sucked into a black hole but instead was transported to the Morinus, a dimension where time operated differently than his previous plane of existence. Quill lived on the planet for more than 144 years and became a literal Star-Lord as the Master of the Sun, who was given immense cosmic powers. Upon returning to the Guardians, his ship the Bowie was destroyed by Zeus in a battle against the Gods of Olympus. Considering his colorful history when naming his ships after pop culture figures, his newest choice is more than appropriate.

In Guardians of the Galaxy #14 by Al Ewing, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and VC’s Cory Petit, the cosmic heroes are split into two teams. Phyla-Vell’s team ends up on a planet with a Skrull fire cult worshipping Ego the Living Planet. When they’re attacked, they quantum swap from the planet onto a ship. Quasar doesn’t recognize the vessel and Marvel Boy tells her that with the Bowie being destroyed, they needed a new ship – this time, called the Almond.
While the comic doesn’t officially say why the ship is named Almond, given Star-Lord’s history of naming his ships in both the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe after pop culture figures from the 80s and 90s – including the Milano, the Bowie, and the Benatar – it’s likely it’s named after Marc Almond, who was the lead singer of Soft Cell. The band was best known for their hit Tainted Love – while Almond had a successful solo career as well.
Naming the ship after Marc Almond would be the second consecutive vessel Star-Lord has piloted named after a famous British singer. Considering Guardians of the Galaxy writer Al Ewing is also British and there aren’t many famous pop culture icons with the last name Almond, it’s most likely named after the new wave singer. Or, maybe Peter Quill decided to start naming his ships after nuts and the Almond was his first choice. Regardless, the Almond, Star-Lord’s new ship, has taken flight across the galaxy in the Marvel Universe. Guardians of the Galaxy #14 is in stores now.
