Dancing With The Stars’ dancer and judge Derek Hough reveals that his worst moment on the show involved his very first partner, Jennie Garth.
Dancing With The Stars‘ Derek Hough has revealed his worst moment during a performance on the show. He became a professional dancer on the long-running competition series in season 5, when he was paired up with Jennie Garth; they were eliminated one week before the finals. Hough went on to partner with such celebrities as Brooke Burke, Nicole Scherzinger, Ricki Lake, Shawn Johnson, Kellie Pickler, Amber Riley, Bindi Irwin and Marilu Henner. He and his partners made it to the finals multiple times and ended up winning the Mirrorball Trophy a total of six times, more than any other professional dancer in the history of Dancing With The Stars.

After a break from the show, Hough ended up coming back to Dancing With The Stars but as a judge. During season 29, he filled in for Len Goodman, who was unable to fly to the United States due to travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. When the series returns for its milestone 30th season, both Goodman and Hough will be back as judges alongside Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli.
During an interview with Us Weekly, Hough revealed his worst moment during a Dancing With The Stars performance, and it involved Garth, his very first partner. He said, “In my very first season, my second dance, this is when I’m like, ‘This is my chance. I’m going to show what I got. This is my first time on TV doing this.’ And I dropped my partner, Jennie Garth, on live television.” Hough called that moment “the worst thing” but added that “the good thing about that is I got that out of the way real quick. That’s the worst thing that could possibly happen, so it’s only uphill from there.“
On the other end of the spectrum, Hough said that his most memorable moment on Dancing With The Stars came when he was paired with American Idol alum Pickler. The two were tasked with performing a freestyle dance. He said, “That was a dance that was a risk. I was like, ‘Let’s do something different from everybody else.’ It was the first year they were doing super-sized freestyle and everybody’s doing more and more and more.” He called the performance “a special moment.” That dance in the finals left a huge impression on the judges and viewers. They received a perfect score and ended up winning season 16 the following night.
The professional dancers and celebrity partners go through many ups and downs during their journeys on Dancing With The Stars. Even the judges and hosts have their own mishaps sometimes. One night, Inaba fell out of her chair after commenting on a performance. Sean Spicer was booed by the audience in his season. Lisa Vanderpump fainted during rehearsals. The most famous one of them all might be when Marie Osmond collapsed during the judges’ comments. Hough must have been devastated with his mishap, especially since it happened during his debut season. At least he was able keep on going with Dancing With The Stars, which resulted in multiple wins and a promotion to the judging panel.
