Philamena Colello Chiaravelotti

LEWISTON – Philamena Colello Chiaravelotti, 89, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2021, with loved ones by her side.

Her strong and tenacious spirit, which allowed her to live independently in her home despite numerous health adversities, was offset by her kind, compassionate and nurturing soul.

Philamena was born Oct. 12, 1931 to Leonardo and Angela (Calabrese) Colello in Portland and was one of 11 children. She was a graduate of Portland High School and wed Frank Chiaravelotti in 1949, married 72 years until his death early last year. They resided in Lewiston and established The Italian Bakery in 1960, where she worked, often behind the scenes until 2008, all while raising seven children and caring for several grandchildren.

Philamena loved to cook and bake. Besides the traditional Sunday pasta dinners there was usually something delicious in the works. Upon arriving for a visit, the first stop was typically at the stove to see what was cooking.

She enjoyed the ocean, especially Reid State Park, the spot of many family outings. She was passionate about keeping the birds around her house fed and sheltered and was completely dedicated to the many rescue pets she cared for over the years. “Nonna” greatly enjoyed seeing her great-grandchildren, Remi and Sam and the newest addition, baby Lucas.

She will be missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Linda, Rick (Karen), Frank, Jon and Jamie (Jana) Chiaravelotti, Mary Radcliffe, and Lisa (Tim) Chouinard; grandchildren, Erick, Mia, Aaron and Justin Chiaravelotti, Ashley Rich, Jessica Parker, Michelle Napoli, Nikki Kelson, Jake and Travis Chouinard; and her only surviving sibling, Sam Colello; along with many close nieces, nephews and good friends.

A graveside service will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery, on Wednesday, May 19, at 1 p.m. Arrangements under the care of the Albert and Burpee Funeral Home, online condolences may be shared with her family at http://www.albert-burpee.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Best Friends Animal Society (bestfriends.org ) in Philamena’s memory.
