On a recent episode of Happily Ever After, Kalani revealed that she and Asuelu sleep in separate beds. But that dynamic isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
On a recent episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?, Kalani Faagata admitted that she and her husband Asuelu Pulaa have been sleeping in different rooms, and although it seems like a red flag, separate beds have surprising benefits. Kalani and Asuelu’s relationship has been troubled for some time, and this season, Kalani and Asuelu have hit rock bottom. Sleeping in separate rooms isn’t necessarily a death knell for their relationship, but if Kalani and Asuelu aren’t on the same page about it, that’s a problem.
Kalani and Asuelu never really got the chance to ease into their relationship and let it develop naturally, because soon after Kalani met her future husband while on vacation in Samoa, she lost her virginity to Asuelu and got pregnant. After that, their relationship was fast-tracked and the couple got married at the end of their season on 90 Day Fiancé and had a second child. The focus of their story on the spin-off Happily Ever After? has been of them trying to navigate their marriage with two young children, and so far on season 6, it hasn’t been going well.

While shopping for furniture with her sister Kolini, Kalani revealed that Asuelu sleeps in his “game room” most nights while she sleeps in their bedroom, and that there is very little romance between them. “He basically comes in the room when he wants to have sex…we have like, conjugal visits at this point,” she commented. Fans have taken note of Kalani and Asuelu’s incompatibility and fighting, so the news that they’ve been sleeping apart and are not connecting sexually isn’t that surprising.
Sleeping in separate beds isn’t as uncommon as one might think. A 2017 survey reported that one in four married couples sleep in different beds, and there are many reasons why a couple might decide to do so. Getting enough sleep can have a huge impact on mental health and over attitude, and sharing a bed with a partner or spouse can get in the way of a restful night. Though many couples might fear a lack of intimacy when sleeping in separate beds, it does force a couple to be more proactive and intentional about their sex life, which can also be beneficial.
However, for Kalani and Asuelu, their separate beds situation doesn’t seem to be a conscious decision, but rather a natural progression of their crumbling marriage. A big problem for the couple is Asuelu’s immaturity and childishness, which prevents them from having genuine and well-informed discussions about topics like whether to sleep in different rooms. From what viewers have seen on 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?, the intimacy issues between Kalani and Asuelu are probably more dire than their sleep issues, and sleeping in separate beds is a bad sign for them.
