The latest Black Widow clip shows Nat and Yelena engaging in a car chase with a motorcyclist, highlighting a major difference between the sisters.
A long-awaited glimpse of Black Widow highlights the differences between Natasha Romanoff and her adoptive sister, Yelena Belova. The clip, revealed during the MTV Movie & TV Awards, shows the two sisters in a high-speed car chase with a woman on a motorcycle hot on their trail. Fans have been waiting on Black Widow for a long time now, and a delay from its original May 2020 has resulted in more eagerness for any new information Marvel might release leading up to its July premiere.
After Natasha’s heart-breaking death in Avengers: Endgame, the Black Widow solo movie goes back in time to explore what happened to Natasha in the two years between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. The film will fill in the missing pieces surrounding Natasha’s past as she reunites with members of her Russian family. As that past comes back to haunt her, Natasha will have to confront it in order to survive. Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, is a spy who was raised in the Red Room, the same Soviet training program as Natasha. Though their family dynamics might seem dysfunctional, their obvious care for each other bleeds through the Black Widow trailers.

Though the clip is brief, it does a lot to highlight the difference between Natasha and Yelena. The bickering throughout their escape is familial in nature, but it gives audiences an insight into Yelena’s unique personality. While both sisters seem proficient in sarcasm, their approaches toward handling enemies are markedly different. Following Civil War, Natasha knows that there is merit in remaining subtle and avoiding collateral damage. Natasha is known for being level-headed and calculating, so her natural inclination to slip away quietly makes sense.
Yelena, however, takes a different approach to evading their pursuer. After Natasha’s attempts to evade the motorcyclist don’t immediately work, Yelena’s impatience shines through, and her quick quip of “Well, your plan sucks” showcases a glimpse at her personality. Her approach to tackling their problem is much more straightforward, even though her actions are risky. Kicking the car door out manages to cut off their pursuer without causing too much collateral damage, implying Yelena’s fighting style mirrors her forthright personality compared to Natasha’s calculated decisions.
This is where Yelena’s lack of experience compared to Natasha shines through; in the comics, Yelena goes through Red Room after Natasha has already left, meaning she has far less experience in the field. This inexperience could steer her straightforward approach into recklessness easily, a trait that would make an interesting foil against Natasha’s character. With Yelena poised to possibly take the helm as Black Widow, these differences become even more important; if she becomes the Black Widow successor, her recklessness could make the rest of the Avengers hesitant to accept her. Working closely with Nat and the rest of their team in Black Widow might be exactly what Yelena needs to gain the experience she needs to continue Natasha’s legacy.
