Show Wins Top Honors At MTV’s Reality TV Awards

RuPaul’s Drag Race beat Jersey Shore, 90 Day Fiancé, and other big-name shows at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Gottmik and Symone made an appearance.

Congratulations are in order for RuPaul’s Drag Race after the show won the most honors at the recent MTV Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted. Despite being up against some tough competition, Mama Ru and friends came out on top in an impressive three categories. Since these wins were determined by public voting, it’s clear drag has become more mainstream in pop culture, especially during the pandemic. The fierce fashion moments, Werk Room drama, and inspiring stories served as an escape for many, and the awards are proof of that.

Drag Race was one of the first shows to resume production in the midst of COVID-19. Once intense safety protocols were put in place, the season 13 queens entered a quarantine bubble to not only advance their drag careers, but also provide entertainment to millions. It was a season like no other that featured some of the most talented queens to ever grace the runway, including the first trans contestant, Gottmik, and Rosé, who is now embarking on a solo music career. While trapped in quarantine, viewers witnessed lip sync plot twists, spot-on Snatch Game characterizations, and gripping feuds, such as the intense moment between Kandy Muse and Tamisha Iman. Drag Race season 13 offered four months of high-quality reality TV at a time when it was needed most.

Because of the entertainment it provided amidst the pandemic, Drag Race won Best Reality Cast, Best Competition Series, and Best Host at the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted, as reported by Reality TV World. The show was chosen by fans over the heavily-watched Jersey Shore: Family Vacation90 Day Fiancé, and The Masked Singer. RuPaul, judge Michelle Visage, season 13 winner Symone, and Gottmik were on hand to accept the coveted awards. The two queens were praised by RuPaul, who said, “I’ve got to say, you two are a perfect example of why our casting is so great. You’re two of the greatest cast members we have ever had on our little show.” On Instagram, Gottmik described the wins as an “absolute DREAM” and congratulated her “gorge” season 13 castmates.

For many queens, having drag be loved by the masses is truly a dream. On Drag Race, they often reflect on being shunned in their small hometowns because very few people used to embrace the art of drag. But now, fans hailing from all walks of life flock to parking lots, theaters, and other venues to see a drag show. From Drive ‘N Drag to the Werk the World Tour, the lineup of events is ever-growing.

Meanwhile, names like Trixie Mattel, Shangela, and Bob the Drag Queen are household names. Even international queens like Lawrence Chaney, Bimini Bon Boulash, and Joe Black are beloved figures thanks to the online streaming of RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK. All of these queens are part of a drag revolution. They’re paving the way for local, lesser-known queens to have their art noticed and appreciated.
