Square Enix looter shooter Outriders hit over 3.5 million unique players in its first month, which is quite impressive for a brand-new IP in a competitive genre. Outriders likely benefited a fair amount on that front thanks to launching on Xbox Game Pass, but it still sold well despite those subscribers getting it at no extra cost. However, it likely didn’t hurt the game’s word-of-mouth marketing.
Outriders was a big Xbox Game Pass success and dominated a lot of the talk in the gaming industry in April. Outriders likely garnered a lot of unsuspecting new fans due to its easy availability and co-op gameplay in a current market lacking many new, well-supported online titles. However, not all the attention was positive, as game-breaking glitches and server issues pervaded many players’ launch month experiences.

Publisher Square Enix confirmed Outriders gained 3.5 million unique players in its first month and averaged out 30 hours of playtime per player, which shows a high level of engagement for players that did pick it up. With new Outriders DLC in the works, it’s likely players will continue to return to the game over time and continue to play as developer People Can Fly continues to get it into proper shape. Co-Head of Studio at Square Enix External Studios Jon Brooke, spoke highly of the game’s launch and expressed enthusiasm over the game’s future:
“Launching a new game IP is never easy and we remain very grateful for the community’s support and feedback – we continue to listen carefully and want to assure everyone that we are committed to improving and enhancing the experience in the coming weeks and months. We also look forward to expanding on OUTRIDERS in the future.”
Although it has had major success, Outriders has been plagued with bugs since launch. People Can Fly has been fairly quck good at nipping them all in the bud over time, but some glitches – like the inventory wipe glitch – permanently affected some players’ saves and have yet to be fully addressed. Given it’s the first time the studio has tried to make a live-service game of this scale, though, there are learning curves to be expected.
Despite its technical flaws, the game itself has been received well by fans and critics alike. It may not be in a position to exactly compete with something from a more experienced studio like Bungie and its genre-defining Destiny, but Outriders has made a name for itself in that space and will may come into its own as it continues to be flushed out with content over the months and (perhaps) years.
