Warner Bros. confirms that James Gunn’s John Cena-led Peacemaker show will premiere on HBO Max in 2022, kicking off the DCEU’s streaming future.
Warner Bros. has confirmed that the John Cena-led Peacemaker show will premiere on HBO Max in 2022. The series, created by James Gunn, will star Cena as the titular DC antihero in a reprisal of his upcoming performance in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Peacemaker will also star Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Holland, Chris Conrad, and Chukwudi Iwuji.
Peacemaker, real name Christopher Smith, is a violent vigilante who is driven by a desire to bring peace, no matter how many people he has to kill to achieve it. John Cena will debut the character in The Suicide Squad later this year, where he’ll be fighting alongside the likes of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), and Bloodsport (Idris Elba). The spinoff Peacemaker series will show the origins of the character and flesh out his absurdist, violent story.

At the company’s spring upfront presentations, Warner Bros. confirmed that Peacemaker will be arriving on HBO Max in 2022. That puts in a release window close to the theatrical premiere of The Suicide Squad, which will theoretically build up more public awareness for and interest in the character. Warner Bros. has not revealed the specific release date for Peacemaker at this time.
As the first HBO Max series set in the DCEU, Peacemaker has a good bit of pressure on its shoulders. The franchise has seen something of a resurgence in popularity over the past six months with the releases of Wonder Woman 1984 and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and excitement is building steadily for The Suicide Squad’s release. The MCU has already found great success transferring its character into streaming series, and Warner Bros. may follow a similar path in the future depending on the success of Peacemaker. With old characters returning in upcoming films like The Flash and Aquaman 2 and new ones being introduced in projects like Blue Beetle and Zatanna, there are a lot of exciting directions the DCEU could go.
Despite the pressure of trailblazing, Peacemaker is still a relatively lower-stakes project for DC, as the eponymous antihero isn’t exactly a household name. John Cena is a major star with a strong fan following, and the success of the new show will largely depend on his ability to sell Peacemaker to viewers who are unfamiliar with the character. James Gunn has successfully launched obscure comics characters into the mainstream before with Guardians of the Galaxy, and it looks like he could be about to do it again in The Suicide Squad. Peacemaker releases on HBO Max in 2022.
