Thronebreaker Pre-Registration Now Open On Android

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, an often overlooked gem from creators behind The Witcher series, releases with a free intro on Android next month.

Card-based RPG Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is coming to Android devices next week, and fans will be able to try out the first few hours of the game for free. Originally released in 2018, Thronebreaker began development as a part of CD Projekt Red’s Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, though before it launched it became its own standalone game. Owing to its origins, the title’s gameplay – whether fighting a battle or solving puzzles – revolves around Gwent, and players must successfully complete card-based challenges to move forward. The spin-off’s skillfully woven story focuses on Meve, Queen of Lyria and Rivia, in her attempt to protect her small, northern realm. The game’s Android release will offer fans interested in checking out Geralt’s old stomping grounds the ability to explore these lands before committing to the full game.

Next month’s release is not the only mobile title fans of the series have to look forward to. The Witcher: Monster Slayer was announced last summer as a Pokémon GO-like title set in The Witcher universe. The announcement showed off what a real-world encounter with a Leshen, one of The Witcher’s more powerful monsters, might look like. However, the game does not have a definite release date yet.

Fans of The Witcher franchise will be able to download Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales on Android on June 17, according to CD Projekt Red. For those who may be on the fence about the Gwent-focused narrative, the developers are offing a chunk of the early game to download for free, promising that players will have the chance to get a feel for Thronebreaker’s unfamiliar gameplay and story before needing to purchase the full experience. Interested players can sign up for pre-registration on Google Play today in order to get alerted when the game becomes available.

Looking beyond next month’s release, The Witcher series seems to have a busy future ahead, though recent issues within CD Projekt Red may interfere with the developer’s plans. The Witcher 3’s director, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who was reportedly involved in the franchise’s next title, left the company following allegations of unbecoming conduct. This departure, coupled with the abysmal launch of and ongoing issues with Cyberpunk 2077, has left many wondering about the state of the studio and the future Witcher installment.

Though fans of The Witcher franchise may be eager to hear more about a new mainline game, the news of Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales launching on Android devices with a free demo should not be overlooked. It is possible that the title’s card-based gameplay may have kept players from exploring the prequel’s wonderful narrative and characters, but hopefully a hands-on preview will draw players in.
