DCEU’s Future Should Make The Rock & John Cena’s WWE Rivalry Canon

As the DCEU goes forward, the franchise should make The Rock (Black Adam) and John Cena’s (Peacemaker) iconic WWE rivalry canon in the films.

Since Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and John Cena will be joining the DC Universe soon as Black Adam and Peacemaker, respectively, the DCEU should canonize their WWE rivalry, DC style. The DCEU is continuing to progress, with new heroes and villains coming to the big screen and HBO Max for original spinoff shows. After many years of development, Johnson’s Black Adam is officially close to becoming a reality with principal photography underway. But Johnson isn’t the only former WWE legend to join the DCEU as Cena is playing Christopher Smith, a.k.a. Peacemaker, in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

That won’t be the final time fans see Cena’s DC player as HBO Max is premiering a Peacemaker series in January 2022. By next summer, both of the wrestlers will be in the interconnected universe at the same time. While their respective DC roles will be tremendous additions to their already rich filmography, Johnson and Cena are also best known for their long-lived rivalry as wrestling icons. Even though they haven’t been fictional rivals for quite some time, the fact that they will be operating in the same comic book universe provides a prime opportunity to pit them against each other.

Even though Black Adam is traditionally Shazam’s nemesis, the DCEU will take him in a different direction. Johnson’s solo film will see Teth-Adam be depicted as an anti-hero, fighting injustice far differently from conventional heroes like those found in the Justice Society of America, who will also appear in Black Adam. Cena’s Peacemaker sees himself as a hero, but who is willing to achieve peace by any means necessary, making the character yet another non-traditional superhero. This in mind, seeing these two complex and uncompromising figures find themselves on opposing sides of a topic or battle would no doubt prove engaging on a plot level just as much as it would provide epic fight scenes.

As much fun as it would be to pay homage to their WWE history, their DCEU rivalry would come from a refreshing perspective. For WWE fans, it’d mean something big for them, but for a mainstream audience, their conflict has to make sense other than seeing two actors who worked together before. Even if a team like the Justice League would categorize them as villains, Black Adam and Peacemaker represent a complex side of heroism.

It would be a shame if the DCEU didn’t take advantage of having them share the screen at least once, given their respective star-power – and the fact that this could take place in either a Black Adam sequel, a DCEU crossover film, or Peacemaker season 2 and beyond. Whichever way Warner Bros. would choose from, there are a few solid options where the two former WWE wrestlers could duke it out, but in a fun comic book setting. Who knows, maybe even their rivalry in the DCEU could lead to a partnership, should Johnson’s Black Adam and Cena’s Peacemaker be on the same page.
