How Sebastian Stan Learned He Got MCU Bucky Barnes Role

Sebastian Stan revealed how he learned that he got the role of Bucky Barnes in the MCU from Marvel president Kevin Feige on April Fool’s Day.

Sebastian Stan shared how he learned that he got the role of Bucky Barnes in the MCU. Stan first made his Marvel debut in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger as Steve Rogers’ best friend. The two fought side-by-side during World War II before it seemed that Bucky died during battle. Of course, any comics fan knew that Bucky would be destined to return, especially when it was announced that the sequel to the 2011 film would be titled Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Stan may have found out about Captain America 2 via Comic Con, but his future in the MCU was officially sealed.

Since then, Bucky has played an integral part in Steve Rogers’ story, making subsequent appearances in Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. All of this culminated in Bucky finally getting his due in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Marvel’s second original series to debut on Disney+. The show dove deep into the traumatic effects of Bucky’s time as the Winter Soldier while pairing him up with Steve Rogers’ successor, Sam Wilson.

No one could’ve foreseen Bucky’s popularity or the future he would have in the MCU and Stan revealed as much when he told Variety how he found out about getting the role. The actor says that he got the news on April Fool’s Day. He received a call from an unknown number, unaware that it was Marvel president Kevin Feige. Stan ignored the call and later found out via voicemail that Marvel wanted to bring him onboard as Bucky Barnes.

It was April 1, April Fool’s Day. I was on set working on something and then this unknown number called me, and I don’t usually pick up unknown numbers. I kept shooting, and then, an hour or two later, I finally looked at my voicemail, clicked on it, and it was [Marvel boss] Kevin [Feige]. He was like, ‘Hey, we’re trying to reach you. Just want to let you know that we’d love to do this with you. We’d love for you to play James ‘Bucky’ Barnes. Give me a call back.’ He was very casual about it all.

Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Although Bucky may have operated as a supporting character during his early tenure in the MCU, he has grown into a full-fledged hero throughout his time in the franchise and his future is looking as bright as ever. Although Stan has no announced appearances coming up in the MCU, it seems all but guaranteed that Falcon and the Winter Soldier was only the beginning of a new chapter for Bucky. There’s always a chance Bucky could pop up alongside Sam Wilson in Captain America 4, as Marvel has already made it clear that the pair’s dynamic is integral to each character’s development.

There’s also a slew of other projects that Stan could appear in as Bucky. His connection to Wakanda has many wondering if he’ll pop up in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. There’s also numerous other projects that he could appear in as part of the MCU’s larger story, from the various Marvel Disney+ series in the works to the massive slate of films the studio has in store for fans. Either way, one thing is clear: Bucky Barnes is one of the founding players in the MCU and the franchise isn’t quite done with him yet.
