The Richard Donner-directed 1985 classic The Goonies has been reimagined as a Funko board game that’s scheduled to release this summer.
The 1985 adventure comedy The Goonies is primed to return this summer as a Funko board game, The Goonies: Never Say Die. Most know Funko for its vinyl figurines and bobbleheads, but the brand has expanded in recent years, exploring other avenues such as Funko-branded lamps and headphones. Reportedly, there’s even a Funko movie in development at Warner Bros. Animation. Not many know about the manufacturer’s board games, however.
Funko Games has announced The Goonies: Never Say Die, a board game scheduled to launch in June 2021 for $34.99. Billed as a one versus all adventure game, one player will assume the role of a Dungeon Master-esque character, the Goondocks Master, who controls villains like One-Eyed Willie and the Fratellis family. Meanwhile, everyone else plays the titular The Goonies – Chunk, Data, Mikey, Mouth and Sloth. Never Say Die’s campaign features nine different adventures; those longing for shorter experiences will also have the option to set up one-shots.
Though it may seem strange at first glance, The Goonies as a board game makes perfect sense in many respects. At its core rests a story about an ancient map and lost pirate treasure, which sets our heroes off an adventure. What more could you want from an D&D-inspired board game?
Funko Games is responsible for publishing a few other board games, too. In 2019, for example, the publisher released a DC Comics strategy game, Funkoverse Strategy Game: DC Comics 100, that see two to four characters go head to head. Clearly, Funko plans to continue exploring this segment of its business.
