The Chilling Reign expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game releases in June, but VMAX cards from Japanese releases show what fans can expect.
The Pokémon Trading Card Game is once again making headlines as its increased popularity has caused some retailers like Target to stop selling cards for now. However, for many longtime fans, a lot of attention has turned toward the next Pokémon TCG expansion: Chilling Reign. For those looking to find out what upcoming VMAX cards will release in the new set, here’s everything to know.
The Chilling Reign expansion will release on June 18, 2021. This time around, the latest Sword & Shield set is focusing on the Crown Tundra DLC. This means Galarian versions of Moltres, Articuno, and Zapdos – as well as cards featuring Calyrex. As with many expansions since the mechanic was introduced, Chilling Reign will also have a good selection of VMAX Pokémon cards for players to collect and use in battle.

V and VMAX cards essentially recreate the Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing seen in Pokémon Sword & Shield. VMAX cards are especially powerful and have high HP, which makes them valuable in battles. They’re also much rarer than normal Pokémon cards, which means they can sometimes sell for good sums of money. Cards from the Chilling Reign expansion have already released in Japan under different expansion names, which means western players have an idea of what V and VMAX Pokémon cards to expect in June.
What VMAX Cards Are Coming To Pokémon’s Chilling Reign
Of course, some Pokémon cards are getting cut from the Chilling Reign expansion. Not counting Secret Rares, Japan’s TCG expansions focusing on the Crown Tundra had significantly more cards than the 190 or so announced for Chilling Reign. However, this offers fans a good basis for what VMAX Pokémon to expect when the set releases. In alphabetical order, these include:
- Blaziken VMAX
- Celebi VMAX
- Dracozolt VMAX
- Galarian Slowking VMAX
- Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX
- Metagross VMAX
- Sandaconda VMAX
- Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX
- Tornadus VMAX
It’s worth mentioning that this list is imperfect, since there’s been no official card listing for Chilling Reign yet and some will most likely be cut and saved for future releases. Additionally, Chilling Reign will have eight VMAX cards, so at least one of these Pokémon will be cut. However, both the Ice Rider Calyrex and Shadow Rider Calyrex cards have already been confirmed and unveiled.
Until an official listing of all Pokémon cards for the Chilling Reign expansion are released, there’s no way to know for sure which VMAX cards will be included. Although, based on the VMAX cards previously released in Japan that haven’t made it West yet, fans can already have a pretty good idea of which VMAX cards to expect next in the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
