Why WWE’s The Miz Wants To Play Johnny Cage In Mortal Kombat 2

WWE superstar The Miz sheds light on why he wants to play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2, vowing to do everything in his power to get the role.

WWE superstar Mike “The Miz” Mizanin explains why he’d love to play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. The recent live-action reboot of Mortal Kombat centered around Lewis Tan as Cole Young, using the new character as an audience surrogate during his scenes with familiar fighters like Sonya Blade and Scorpio. Although he doesn’t appear in the movie, Cage’s presence is teased for a potential sequel in a closing scene. Todd Garner, one of the producers on the reboot, has also talked about the possibility of a standalone movie focused primarily on Cage.

This had led to a debate among fans about which actor should portray Cage if Mortal Kombat 2 is officially announced. Some have argued that Jean-Claude Van Damme would be a perfect choice, pointing out that the character was originally based on the action star. Others have cited Ryan Reynolds, Justin Hartley, and even Keanu Reeves. One name that has consistently been mentioned, The Miz, is known more for his performances in the wrestling ring than in movies or television. But in new remarks, the WWE star opens up about why he feels he’s right for the role.

Speaking with Looper to discuss the #GoWithConfidence charity auction, Miz was asked about the recent online push for him to play Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. He noted that he didn’t expect all the positive attention, admitting that being cast as Cage would be a dream come true. You can read Miz’s quote below:-

All of a sudden, I just see my name associated with Johnny Cage, just flipping through. And it’s not negative, it’s all positive. And normally when I’m in a feed of Twitter, it’s negative, 100%, all the time. But man, was it positive, and, man, were a lot of my fans really wanting me, even people, even my peers, even the co-creator of Mortal Kombat was like, “Yeah, we’d love to see The Miz as Johnny Cage.” And honestly that would be a dream come true and I would put everything I possibly have into that character and make sure that it gives the Mortal Kombat fans the Johnny Cage that they deserve.

And I will do everything in my power to hopefully get that part if the opportunity presents itself. I don’t know if it will, but if it does on putting my name in the hat, I want the part. So whatever I have to do to get it, I will do. I will put forth the entire, I have an immense work ethic and whatever it takes, I will be there to try and do it. And if I don’t get it, that’s okay too. But I hope the person that does get it will put in the same amount of work and dedication and give the fans exactly what they want, because I know what I want out of Johnny Cage. I really do. I love the game. I’ve loved it since I played it on Sega Genesis, wouldn’t play it on Super Nintendo, only Sega Genesis.

the Miz Johnny Cage Mortal kombat 2

Miz has been routinely floated among the casting choices to play Cage, well before a reboot of Mortal Kombat had even gained steam. Beyond the fact that he looks the part, Miz modeled his WWE gimmick after Cage. Most prominently during a period in 2014-2015, Miz’s persona drew heavy inspiration from the popular video game character. With sunglasses, a movie star smile, and a formidable ego, the similarities are plain to see. Also, like Cage, Miz is a capable competitor that is nonetheless underestimated by his opponents. Miz could draw on these past experiences to bring Cage to life in Mortal Kombat 2.

Despite the fact that a second installment of the video game adaptation has not been given the green light, there are signs that an official announcement could be forthcoming. Simon McQuoid, the reboot’s director, stated that he is open for returning to helm a follow-up. Greg Russo also revealed that he sees Mortal Kombat as a trilogy, with the first film set before the tournament, leading into the tournament for the sequel. Hopefully, if it happens, Miz will get a chance to try for the character he’s always wanted to portray.
