Anthony Mackie Hopes To Play Captain America For The Next 20 Years

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie reflects on his hopes for his future as Captain America and his Marvel Studios contract.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie reflects on his hopes for his future as Captain America and his Marvel Studios contract lasting for 20 years. The Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe series centered on the titular duo as they come to grips with the departure of Steve Rogers after the events of Avengers: Endgame and coming to grips with the future of his vibranium shield and who should don the moniker of Captain America, as well as facing off against the anti-patriotism group the Flag Smashers. Developed by Malcolm Spellman, the series included the MCU introductions of Joaquin Torres, John Walker aka U.S. Agent and Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

Mackie made his MCU debut as Sam Wilson aka The Falcon in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and carried the role over into a brief appearance in the following year’s Ant-Man, 2016’s Civil War and the last two Avengers outings. The Disney+ series ended with Mackie’s Sam electing to take on the moniker of Captain America in Steve’s absence while Wyatt Russell’s Walker became the U.S. Agent with the help of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Val. On the heels of the series’ success and the day of the finale, it was announced that a fourth Captain America film was in the works with Spellman and staff writer Dalan Musson scripting, though no confirmation has been made yet whether Mackie would carry the role on in the next film.

While chatting with Variety at the red carpet for the MTV Movie & TV Awards, Mackie was asked how long his contract was set to last with Marvel Studios. Thanking the journalist for his kind words, Mackie opened up about his hopes to stick with the character and studio for the next 20 years. Read what he had to say below:

“I hope the next two decades, that’s what I’m hoping for. So if I can be 65 and still doing this, I’m crushing it.”

One thing Marvel has become notorious for is keeping things under a strict lock and key, especially when it comes to their future projects, but stars including Elizabeth Olsen have become a little looser with their tongues on what their contracts have entailed or were originally supposed to cover. With the studio receiving near-universal acclaim for taking the step of establishing Sam as the first Black man on screen to take on the mantle of Cap, it seems hard to believe Mackie wouldn’t be able to get another 20 years with the studio if the narrative calls for it. Especially with Marvel looking to keep their storytelling groups diverse both in front of and behind the camera, Mackie’s devoted presence would be a shame to lose whether it’s two years or 20.

Not to mention, the camaraderie Mackie has shown with a number of his fellow actors, including the fun rivalry between him and Spider-Man star Tom Holland, proves him to be a strong team player for Marvel to want to keep around. Though there’s still a lot of unknowns on what will happen with Mackie and the title of Cap after the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, there shouldn’t be a doubt Mackie isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. For now, fans can at least revisit the exciting reveal of his new suit with all episodes of the MCU series currently streaming on Disney+.
