A PlayStation 5-exclusive Final Fantasy title is being rumored for a June reveal at E3 2021, supposedly in addition to Final Fantasy 16.
According to a new rumor, a PlayStation 5-exclusive Final Fantasy title from Square Enix is rumored for an E3 2021 reveal. If true, this rumored, unannounced game will apparently be revealed alongside possible further news about the previously unveiled Final Fantasy XVI.
As for E3, the annual event was on the decline as more and more publishers pulled out of the games industry conference in favor of their own in-house presentations by E3 2019. Once the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, all large industry events were shut down to prevent large in-person crowds from gathering in indoor spaces, and E3 2020 was canceled. This year however, the conference is returning in a digital-only format, and it seems like E3 2021 might be the biggest of its kind in some time.

According to user Navtra on ResetEra (thanks, Wccftech), who has proven to be trustworthy when it comes to Square Enix reveals in the past, fans “can expect at least one more major [Final Fantasy] announcement in addition to updates on the currently announced stuff ([Final Fantasy] XVI/Endwalker/VIIR)” at Square Enix’s E3 2021 presser. Navtra later elaborated on their comments in another reply, writing, “I believe we’re getting two major [Square Enix] reveals this June: A PS5 exclusive [Final Fantasy] title, and a cross-gen Eidos title.”
However, Navtra also adds in the same reply that they do not know Square Enix’s exact E3 2021 schedule, and are instead “guessing based on knowledge of what games they have in development, how far in they are, and their target release dates.” Despite their trustworthy reputation, readers should take Navtra’s rumors with a grain of salt (or several.
Based on recent developments, it seems PlayStation has been working behind the scenes to keep the Final Fantasy series locked down on the platform as best it can. Earlier in May, it was revealed that the enhanced FF7 Remake Intergrade will remain PS5-exclusive until at least 2022 following an extension of the existing exclusivity deal. With fewer-than-usual first-party exclusives to their names in a new console generation, both PlayStation and Xbox have been in an exclusives arms race, stockpiling development studios left and right, and it seems that Square Enix may be working more closely with Sony than in recent years.
If the latest rumor is true, another PS5-exclusive Final Fantasy title would only further increase PlayStation’s early lead over the Xbox Series X/S in the current-gen exclusives game. As for Final Fantasy fans, between the release of the FF7 Remake in 2020 and the possibility of Final Fantasy XVI in 2021, there’s plenty to be excited about as it is. An unannounced Final Fantasy title could end up being the cherry on top (for PlayStation 5 owners, anyway).
