Zooey Deschanel celebrates the arrival of (500) Days of Summer on Hulu with a reminder that her character is not the villain of the story.
(500) Days of Summer is streaming on Hulu, and Zooey Deschanel is reminding fans that her character is not the villain. The story is a non-linear love story that finds Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) reflecting on his relationship with Summer (Zooey Deschanel) after she dumps him. Tom recounts their emotion before the breakup and afterward, and the story is told from his point of view.
(500) Days of Summer was a breakout hit when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009 and went on to become a moderate hit at the box office when it opened that summer. The film was met with critical acclaim and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and a Best Actor Nomination in a Musical or Comedy for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. While Deschanel had been featured in many films from Elf, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and Almost Famous, it is (500) Days of Summer that is arguably her most iconic film role to date.

Deschanel celebrated the arrival of (500) Days of Summer to Hulu on Instagram. Searchlight Pictures, formally Fox Searchlight, distributed (500) Days of Summer, so it became part of the Disney catalog, one that was put on Hulu as opposed to Disney+. She used the message to remind her fans that Summer is not the villain of the story. Check out her post below:
It has been twelve years since (500) Days of Summer first premiered, and Deschanel’s career has grown in the years since. Two years after the film debuted, she landed the lead on New Girl which lasted for seven seasons. She is now set to host the new version of The Dating Game, alongside Michael Bolton. Deschanel’s performance as Summer is still iconic after all these years, and with new fans likely to discover the film or people rediscovering it, Summer’s place in the narrative is likely to become another point of discussion.
When (500) Days of Summer was first released, many critics have been cynical of Summer, seeing her as manipulating Tom throughout the film. Yet, director Marc Webb crafts the film so it is told from Tom’s point of view, and the audience sees Summer as he does. What audiences can grasp about Summer in the film, is that she is upfront with Tom about what she wants. She makes it clear her intention with Tom about not wanting a relationship, and he expects her to change. While audiences, upon first watching the film, may have been critical of Summer, many have come around on her role in the film and now see Tom as the one in the wrong.
