Ted Lasso star Hannah Wallingham, who plays AFC Richmond owner Rebecca, says that season 2 of the series is similar to The Empire Strikes Back.
Ted Lasso star, Hannah Wallingham, teases that season 2 is like The Empire Strikes Back. Apple TV+ quietly launched Ted Lasso in late 2020 to a great reception, and the heart-warming comedy has only found a larger audience in the months since. The series stars Jason Sudeikis as the titular Ted Lasso, a former American football coach who is hired to coach a professional soccer team. This decision is made by Wallingham’s Rebecca Welton, who is the new owner of AFC Richmond. Both Sudeikis and Wallingham received critical praise and awards for their performances.
Due to the success of season one, expectations are incredibly high as the season two launch nears. Apple TV+ has been busy promoting the series ahead of Ted Lasso‘s season 2 release in July. The marketing materials have focused on what comes next for AFC Richmond after failing to win enough games to stay in the Premier League. This heartbreaking ending set the stage for Ted Lasso season 2 to show AFC Richmond on the rebound and a path to return to the Premier League. Although many are expecting the uplifting series to put the team in a better position moving forward, one of the stars teases otherwise.

During a recent interview with Collider, Hannah Wallingham discussed what fans can expect for Ted Lasso season 2. She teased how Rebecca’s story will continue and not deviate too far from how she was portrayed in the first season. But, Wallingham also mentioned that the best comparison for what Ted Lasso season 2 has in store is The Empire Strikes Back. Read Wallingham’s quote below:
Well, universally, I think Jason put it brilliantly … Jason has described Season 2 as The Empire Strikes Back, and I’m inclined to agree with him.
Comparing Ted Lasso season 2 to The Empire Strikes Back isn’t meant to indicate that the next chapter of the story will go to a galaxy far, far away. Instead, it makes the Apple TV+ series the latest piece of content to compare itself to the iconic 1980 blockbuster. The Empire Strikes Back has become a pop culture short-hand when discussing a darker story that serves as the middle chapter of a larger narrative.
Since both Wallingham and Sudeikis appear to agree that Ted Lasso season 2 is similar to The Empire Strikes Back, it sounds like life won’t get any easier for Ted Lasso, Rebecca, or anyone associated with AFC Richmond. Overall plot details on the new season have remained under wraps, but it is known that a new team psychiatrist will play a major role. And even though the events of season two are likely to make the main characters feel defeated, Lasso’s terrific attitude will hopefully allow Ted Lasso to end with some more optimism heading into season 3.
